At Home: Working against the Clock
Is it an hour or half an hour that you have? Decide! Each time you study, set yourself a given period of time in which to complete it.
Don’t be a clock-watcher. This breed of student is known to watch the seconds turn into minutes, sitting fascinated as the time goes 360 degrees. They sit in the room at their desk quite happily, just so they can say they’ve been ‘studying’.
You must learn to work against the clock. Use the list idea in the last point. Studying can be like entering a big empty vacuum. You need to pin it down.
Here are three questions to ask yourself:
-
How long do you have?
-
What needs to be done?
-
By what time?
You are motivating yourself to complete a productive study session where you will have a sense of achievement and the satisfaction of knowing that you’ve really given it your best effort.
‘Life is like a ten speed bike. Most of us have gears we never use.’
Charles M. Schulz
Be in control of time. To be in control is to be proactive as opposed to being reactive. If you are proactive, you will take responsibility for your study. Make things happen rather than letting them happen.
